Pavlov was born the first of eleven children in Ryazan, Russia, to a village priest and a homemaker. Though he was the eldest of eleven siblings, only five survived to adulthood. He demonstrated intellectual curiosity from childhood and, inspired by the ideas of Dmitry Pisarev and Ivan Sechenov, abandoned his religious studies to pursue science. He enrolled at the University of Saint Petersburg in 1870, where his research on the nerves of the pancreas won a university award, and he later earned a medical degree from the Imperial Medical-Surgical Academy (later renamed the Military Medical Academy) in 1879.
Before completing his doctorate, Pavlov studied in Germany with Carl Ludwig and Rudolf Heidenhain, perfecting techniques for studying digestion in dogs. He earned his doctorate in 1883. Returning to Russia, he eventually became professor of pharmacology and later physiology at the Military Medical Academy, and directed the Department of Physiology at the Institute of Experimental Medicine for 45 years. His work on digestive glands led to the Nobel Prize in 1904.
Pavlov maintained a critical relationship with the Soviet government, expressing disapproval of communism in letters to Stalin and Molotov, though he softened his stance in his final years. He died of double pneumonia in 1936, conscious until the end. His grave is in the Literatorskie mostki section of Volkovo Cemetery in Leningrad.
