Donald Hebb was born in Chester, Nova Scotia, the oldest of four children of Arthur M. Hebb, a physician, and M. Clara Hebb. His mother, influenced by Maria Montessori, homeschooled him until age 8. He performed so well in elementary school that he was promoted to 7th grade at age 10, but after failing and repeating 11th grade, he graduated 12th grade at 16 from Halifax County Academy. He entered Dalhousie University aiming to become a novelist, earning a BA in 1925, then worked as a teacher, farm laborer, and laborer.
Hebb earned a master's degree in psychology at McGill University in 1932 under a colleague of Boris Babkin, with a thesis on conditioned and unconditioned reflexes. After his first wife died in a car accident in August 1933, he studied under Karl Lashley at the University of Chicago and later Harvard, receiving his PhD in 1936. He worked at the Montreal Neurological Institute with Wilder Penfield, researching effects of brain surgery, and later at Queen's University, where he designed the Hebb-Williams maze. In 1942, he joined Lashley at the Yerkes Laboratories, where he wrote *The Organization of Behavior*. He returned to McGill as professor in 1947 and chaired the department from 1948 until retirement in 1972.
