Fechner was born at Groß Särchen, near Muskau, in Lower Lusatia, into a religious family; his father, a maternal uncle, and paternal grandfather were pastors. Some biographers consider he became an atheist in later life, while others say he developed a synthesis of Christianity and paganism. His father died unexpectedly in 1806, leaving the family destitute, and Fechner was raised for a few years by his maternal uncle before reuniting with his mother and sisters in Dresden. His epoch-making work, Elemente der Psychophysik (1860), sought an exact mathematical relation between bodily and conscious facts, resulting in Fechner's law: sensation is a logarithmic function of physical intensity.
